It was almost midnight when Haley arrived at the airport, mascara running down her face, her nose runny. She booked the first available flight home and settled onto a hard, plastic airport chair to wait for the next four hours.

Her hands trembled and her stomach ached and all she wanted to do was call Noah and tell him she'd been wrong and she'd go anywhere with him. It was that need that terrified her, because it took everything in her not to make that call.

Liz had warned her this might happen, that it would be harder to leave him after spending weeks with him, and Liz had been right—this had destroyed her. She made a point of keeping her phone in her backpack, so she couldn't see it, and she'd turned the ringer off in the cab on the way to the airport.

Once she was home and there was physical distance, she'd risk looking to see if Noah had tried to contact her. God, she was so stupid. Already she missed the feel of his arms around her, his body pressed against hers as they fell asleep. Four weeks of him and she'd been willing to throw it all away.

It had taken the hotel bill for her to understand what she'd been about to do. Even after they'd been thrown out of the casino, even after three strangers had seen her naked and vulnerable, seen her having sex on film, she'd still considered staying with him, but seeing how casual he'd been about an amount of money that would have paid all her living expenses and more last year… An amount of money that would have paid for her mother's chemo treatments, and maybe they wouldn't have had to sell the house.

Listening to Noah and Chris try to decide how they could continue living like children, without purpose or plan, she'd finally realized that she was on the verge of giving up everything she'd worked so hard for.

Now she was left without a summer job. She'd have to take out more loans than she'd wanted and still tutor part time to get through the year.

It was what she deserved for almost letting go of her dreams because of a gorgeous, irresistible boy.
